L-3 ESS Successfully Implemented Beyond Line of Sight Data Transmission Capability for the Royal Canadian Air Force

As an avionics prime contractor to the RCAF CP-140 Optimized Weapon System Support program, L-3 ESS successfully implemented Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) data transmission capability on the customer’s maritime patrol aircraft. Unlike line of sight transmissions, BLOS enables non-line of sight transmissions over significant geographical challenges such as those found in the customer’s areas of responsibility.

In early 2013, the BLOS enabled aircraft achieved an operational first by transmitting live streaming video taken from the aircraft’s sensors patrolling in high latitudes to a command element located 4,000-plus kilometers away. This new BLOS capability represents a significant enhancement to the RCAF's ability to conduct sovereignty and other operations over the Canadian High Arctic.
